Inspired by his sister, Joel took up motorbike riding at the age of two and quickly showed a natural aptitude for the sport. He excelled in motocross and dirt track racing, leading to his transition to road racing at the age of nine, which he also aced. His impressive track record earned him the title of 2017 Australian Moto3 Champion. Joel then moved to Italy's Campionato Italiano di Velocità (CIV) to compete in the PreMoto3 class, where he secured two podiums and set the Vallelunga lap record in 2018, finishing in 7th place overall. In 2019, he joined the Leopard Junior team in the CIV Moto3 category, where he attained two podiums and a pole position.

In 2020, Joel faced significant hurdles due to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in his debut year in the Junior World Championship. Despite the challenges, he put on some impressive performances throughout the year. However, 2021 was Joel's most successful year to date, as he partnered with the AGR team to win three races and a pole position in the FIM CEV Repsol Moto3, finishing fourth in the season. He also made his debut in the Moto3 World Championship at the German GP and raced twice more during the year.

Joel signed with the CIP Green Power Team for the 2022 Moto3 World Championship, where he participated as a full-time rider. In 2023, Joel endured a very tough year with his new team in Prustel CF-MOTO. Due to an early injury in round one, Joel struggled throughout the whole year with pain in his ankle. There was light at the end of the tunnel though, as Joel managed to score his first ever World Championship podium at the iconic Philip Island circuit. With a strong and injury free 2024 pre season, Joel looks to make this season his best with the expireneced BOE Motorsports team.
